From Juice to Food: How to Eat Again Post-Cleanse

By now you’ve probably heard that juice cleansing is more than just a trendy diet; for many people, it’s a great way to reset your body and get back to a healthier diet. A three or five-day juice cleanse is particularly beneficial in the spring and summer months when your body is craving nutritious, cooling foods as the days get hotter. While a three-day kick-start to healthy might sound easy and quick, the secret to a successful juice cleanse is to make mindful food choices in the days leading up to and following the cleanse.

Before your cleanse, try to ease into a raw diet. Start by cutting out sugar, processed food, and dairy a week before the cleanse. Eat mostly raw vegetables two days before your first juice. Chowing down on a burger the night before your cleanse will make the first day of juicing extremely difficult!

Perhaps the most important part of a juice cleanse is how you re-introduce food to your body once your cleanse is over. These tips help me to maintain my post-juice glow and even keep off the weight that I shed during the cleanse.

Now, I’m sure you’ve heard of honey, but what about raw honey? Raw honey is essentially honey straight from the hive, meaning it hasn’t been heated or pasteurized, as is most conventional honey today. 

You can easily determine the difference between raw and conventional honey just by looking at it. If it’s transparent, like the clear yellow honey typically found in honey bear jars, then you know it has been heated and processed. This type of honey does not have the same nutritional benefits, nor the same antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties as raw honey. Raw honey appears whitish, opaque, thick, and creamy, and you’ll find it at health food stores, farmers markets, and specialty food retailers.

Contrary to what common sense dictates, if you want to amp up your ability to be and do your very best at anything—whether as an expert or learning something new for the first time— “smart thinking” might be thwarting your success. To truly tap into your full potential, instead of thinking “smart,” you need to “think big”!

There’s no doubt that we value smart thinking. We all want to be considered intelligent. But what does it mean to think smart? We say someone is smart when they have a lot of facts and information , a big vocabulary, a good memory, and seem capable of getting what they want.   

All around us, we see society rewarding those who are seen as smart.  As Malcolm Gladwell points out in his bestseller Outliers: the Story of Success, people who are seen as successful are most likely to be given the kinds of social opportunities that lead to further success: the rich are the ones who get the biggest tax breaks, the best students get the best teachers and the most attention, etc.

For a single lady (or guy!) looking for a relationship, the absolute worst piece of advice that you without a doubt again and again is: “Stop looking. You’ll find the right person when you least expect it.”

While I don’t discredit the underlying message of that advice, I think the framing is completely wrong. Instead of focusing on ending the search for your mate, turn your attention to your journey to becoming your own perfect person. I sincerely believe that you cannot build a healthy relationship until you know who you are and what you want not only from a partner, but also in your life.

Hi Maria,

I am a generally healthy woman, who eats well and exercises, but for years I have faced something that has been uncontrollable: late night eating. I have heard there is something called Night Eating Syndrome (NES), and I think I may have it. I don't crave or eat anything weird but there have been times that I don't remember that I've eaten something until the next morning. I’ve mentioned it to my doctor, but she just blows it off. Help!


Constant late-night eating is a rare but serious disorder that should definitely be dealt with, not brushed off!

Intro to Ayurvedic Doshas: Pitta

Welcome back to our series on Ayurvedic Doshas! Last week we covered what doshas are and their significance to Ayurvedic medicine. Now we’ll begin to dive a bit deeper into each dosha, starting with Pitta. This will help you understand how to recognize when your dosha is out of balance and what you can do to bring it back to center. (If you don’t yet know your dosha, take this short test from Ayurveda expert Deepak Chopra.) 

If your dominant dosha is Pitta, then you have a very fiery nature. In Ayurvedic terms, the Pitta dosha is described as hot, light, intense, sharp and acidic. We’ll touch more on these qualities and how they relate to a balanced Pitta dosha soon. It’s possible to either have physical Pitta characteristics, which means your body is Pitta dominated, or emotional Pitta characteristics, which means you have a Pitta mind. In some cases, a person can have both a Pitta mind and body.
